The Numbers Behind Independence Day

Independence Day celebrations are all about the great outdoors. According to a survey from the National Retail Federation, nearly 65 percent of Americans are planning some kind of barbecue or picnic to celebrate the 4th of July this year. 43 percent of people will attend a fireworks display or community event while just under 12 percent are going to attend a parade.

When it comes to the traditional Independence Day barbecue, Americans don’t mess around. Across the nation, people eat approximately 150 million hotdogs, 190 million pounds of beef and 700 million pounds of chicken every 4th of July. For dessert, they consume an estimated 5 million gallons of ice-cream. This year, the average household will spend $72.23 on food items while total spending across the United States is set to reach $6.6 billion.
