Who’s On Your Team?

Carl Holzem is a Client Service Manager at our Elm Grove branch. For more than 20 years he’s been involved with competitive bowling, which has included trips to the National competition.

When and how did you get into bowling and doing it competitively?

I did not grow up in a bowling family, so I was not introduced as a child. I have an old friend who asked me to join a team shortly after I graduated college. I was reluctant at first, especially when I realized most of the league had been bowling for decades. My first year I managed a 142 average; I can proudly say my average hovers around 200 these days. I am happy that I decided to join a bowling team almost 25 years ago.

What’s your favorite part about bowling competitively?

I played several sports in high school and even played basketball in college, so I always had a competitive spirit in me. Bowling allows me to still compete against other people, despite the fact that I am getting older. It’s also a great outlet to regularly interact with my teammates for a long 34-week season.

Do you have any fun stories/accomplishments you’d like to share?

I never thought 25 years ago that I would have so many bowling balls in my possession, much less one. It’s not unusual to buy a new ball every other year due to technology and wear and tear. I’m also proud to say that I am the only member of my bowling league to have bowling sandals rather than shoes. Besides bowling in my usual league nights, I also compete in tournaments at the local, state, and national levels.  

How can you apply your Annex or competitive bowling experience to the other?

While bowling tends to be an individual sport, the emphasis in a competitive league is your team. I may not have the best night, but my teammates are always there to pick me up. The same holds true for Annex. Our investors can rely on the fact that they have an entire team behind them to ultimately meet all their financial goals.
