Who’s On Your Team?
This week we hear from Maddison Warde for “Who’s on Your Team?”
Maddison is on the Client Operations team as well as the Office Administrator for our Pfister branch. Outside of Annex she runs a small jewelry business that she started in 2020.
When did you start making jewelry? How did you get into it?
With the lockdown at the beginning of COVID paired with a foot injury that had me bed and couch-ridden the entire summer, I most definitely needed a hobby. It wasn’t planned, but I had my sister take me to a craft store with her kids to get out of the house, and that’s when I found the first few pieces which sparked some jewelry ideas. I learned about the polymer clay world via our friend, Tik Tok, and it all just took off from there. I don’t think polymer clay will be a forever interest of mine, but I love it now and it works while I prep to take metalsmith classes in the future.
Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
Everywhere. If someone scrolled through my phone right now, it wouldn’t make sense. There are random pictures of lamps, picture frames, buildings, things out of TV shows and movies. The inspiration is endless. I even have a picture of a car’s logo for shape inspiration. Sometimes I’ll wake up in the middle of the night recalling an environment I was in weeks ago that sparked an idea. It also helps that there are a lot of suppliers out there creating their own tools for clay jewelry makers, as well as the versatility of clay. It’s pretty easily manipulated, so your mind can run wild with prototypes. And those prototypes then ignite inspiration for other pieces as well. Everything you try just sort of feeds into the next idea.
Do you have a favorite method/style? Do you like to stick to a certain type of jewelry?
My favorite style is easily a more natural look. Neutral colors, making faux marble/stones, incorporating florals, etc. But I also like to put an almost vintage twist on it with beading and crystals. A faceted tier drop bead? That’s my weakness.
What has been the biggest learning curve when it comes to jewelry making?
For me it’s remembering that I’m always learning. I’m not going to be perfect at it right away, or even in the next few weeks. So having the patience for myself and giving myself the compassion to make mistakes and try again has been the hardest. I’m sure others can relate, but it’s easier to give others compassion and tear ourselves down. But we deserve to give ourselves the same compassion and patience we’d give someone else.
How can you relate running your small business to your work at Annex?
Giving yourself compassion absolutely applies here. I’m always learning new things at Annex and in the financial industry, and the team is so quick to help each other out that giving yourself that moment to digest and learn is made easy here. I’d also say connecting with my audience reinforces the importance of connecting with Annex clients. When I’m working with or replying to buyers, they love getting a quick and helpful response. That’s what we do here at Annex. We want to connect with clients, talk to them, help them, fulfill their needs. So, if I see how effective a connection is with a business as small as mine, I unmistakably understand the importance of it at Annex. Same goes internally – the machine can’t run as smoothly if we’re not communicating with each other. Luckily, I think it’s another thing we’re solid with. Staying up to date and communicating clearly always remains important, no matter how big or how small of a team you’re on.
