Who’s On Your Team?
This week we hear from Brianna Kollmorgen for “Who’s on Your Team?”
Brianna is the Marketing Project Manager at Annex, where she has eyes and hands on each of the many projects that go through the marketing department. Outside of Annex she is heavily involved in the equestrian world, from competing at shows to managing a boarding facility.
When and how did you get into the equestrian world?
As my parents like to tell the story, they put me on a pony ride at a fair and I refused to get off! They had to pay for 3 extra rounds before convincing me the pony needed a nap. Ever since I can remember horses have been woven into my life. There’s a family story of my great-great-great grandmother who was of Irish nobility that ran away with the stable boy. Her love of horses passed down to my great grandma, who always told stories of her riding adventures. I think I associate them with her.
My parents started allowing me to have riding lessons when I was 7 and I made a deal with them that if I kept up with it, they would buy me a horse. I’m no quitter, and they kept their promise! When I was 8, I got to love my first horse, Calli, a 3-year-old spotted appaloosa, who lived to be about 22 years old. She was sassy and full of life.
What was the biggest learning curve? Has there been anything in particular that you weren’t expecting to need to learn/deal with?
The biggest learning curve is learning that you never know everything! Every day you can learn something new if you look for it. Each horse is different. They have different personalities and different care giving needs.
Do you have any good stories from competing?
Plenty! My favorite has to be spending every weekend with my mom. Each weekend we’d go off to a show. Calli and I were a powerhouse team, eventually winning multiple local, state, and national championships.
The first year at the Youth World show we stayed in one of the most “scuzzy” hotels, as my mom likes to put it, but luckily when you’re at a horse show you
get about 2 hours of sleep each day. We were there for about a week in Oklahoma City in the middle of July, so you just melt when you step out of the air conditioning.
I remember that’s when I learned my mom has a deathly fear of birds! We were walking from one of the barns and a flock of birds happened to swoop towards us, not that close but apparently right on top of us, and my mom dove to the ground screaming!
Not only was this our first time being at Youth Worlds, but Calli and I won third out of 175 entries in our class. Each class has 4 judges, and scores are averaged to get the final standings.
Fast forward, to when my mom finally started riding! She now has her own horse, and we enjoy riding and showing together.
What is your favorite part of working with horses?
My favorite part of working with horses is the connection and bond you build with them. Knowing that your teammate is merely doing what you’re asking just because you asked, has no comparison.
How can you apply your work with horses/running a barn to your work at Annex?
For the past 17 years, my mom and I have been running and managing a boarding facility where we rent our stalls to other horse owners who pay us to take care of their horses’ day to day needs. Having this experience has helped me at Annex to be able to work with all the different personality types as well as handle many unique situations.
Being the Marketing Project Manager now at Annex, I can use the organizational skills and time management skills needed to work and own horses in my day-to-day career.
