New iPhones and Batterygate Help Apple Beat Samsung
Having sold 78.3 million iPhones in the holiday quarter, Apple climbed back to the top of the smartphone market for the first time since 2011. While Apple has the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus to thank for its resurgence, the company’s fiercest competitor Samsung won’t have to look too long for the reasons behind its shortfall.
Still dealing with the fallout of the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, which saw the company first recall and then scrap its most recent flagship release for faulty batteries, Samsung shipped 77.5 million devices in the past quarter, just 0.8 million shy of Apple’s result.
